Investing vs. Spending

Have you invested in the best deal in town?

I read somewhere that hiring someone to help in your business is an investment, not an expense.

The same is true for investing in you. But let's backup a minute.

When we invest in something, we do so because we are expecting a return, return on investment.

There is a corresponding expense with investments but ones we don't mind so much because of the expected return.

Now let me ask you:
how have you invested in the past?

Your education, your college schooling, that would be an investment.

Your home, thats a common investment.

Furniture in your home can be classified as an investment if you are buying for the long haul and spending quite a bit on it. I don't think anyone looks at IKEA furniture as an investment. But perhaps the $10,000 sofa from Pottery Barn is.

Your retirement account(s), those are the most common investments.

Where else?

What about you, have you invested in yourself recently?

The food we eat and the gym/studios that we attend, those are investments in our health and wellness.
Arguably the best insurance we can "buy" for ourselves is our health.

Where else?

Have you invested in your future you? The version that lives 5 or 10 years out, but is based on the decisions you make today, this hour, this minute.

How comfortable are you with investing in yourself? And do you know the difference between investing in yourself and just spending on yourself?

Ahhhh-- now we are on to something.
These are two different things.

Investing in help to organize your home. Investing in a course on how to untether from busy and take back your time. Investing in a coach to help you achieve your soul's purpose.

Spending on yourself with a harmless pair of new earrings. Spending on yourself for the Starbucks latte because you had a rough morning. Spending on yourself with a bottle of wine because #mommyneedsadrink.

When we go to invest, we need to categorize the price away from the value. We need to focus on the return, the results we are hoping for.

Future you says, "don't let price keep you from doing this, remember, you will spend the money on something PLEASE decide to invest it in me. You can count on me, I won't let you down."

Are you ready to invest in the best game in town? Look in the mirror.
