Organizing Magic Wand
"Can you just come over and organize my house for me?"
There is a common trap I see many women get caught up in and that is looking for the Organizing Magician - the person who will wave their magic wand and *POOF* the house is organized.
The truth is I don't have any such wand, neither does KonMarie, or any other organizer out there. None of us went through a secret training program where they gave us the organizing manual and told us to hide it from others.
Asking someone to do it for you is giving away your power and hoping they will swiftly do the thing so you can check it off your plate.
Let's ground this with an example.
When you are at the start block of a weight loss / health journey, you may be thinking of how long this race is going to be and how bad it is going to suck halfway in.
The point? You just want it over with. You want the weight gone so your sexy muscles can shine through all while feeling better and sleeping like a baby.
But getting there? Yea, if you could outsource it then you would.
Organizing is very similar. You just want the excess stuff gone and all the pretty labels and organized drawers to appear. But the decision making process and the hauling away process, please let someone else do that uncomfortable, non-fun part for you.
And I get it. I really do. Unless your name is Jennifer Burnham, then organizing probably isn't your favorite thing to do.
Yet when I work with clients, I can't actually make the decision of what to keep vs what to donate FOR them. I can make recommendations, but I can't make the ultimate decision. Only she knows the value in her things, not me. I can guide and direct and ask the hard questions and turn up the heat when the excuses get cold and icy.
So if you are in the season of wanting organizing help, then slow down your urge. Are you looking for someone to do it for you (because those companies exist)? Or are you looking to make a lasting change and dive into the meaning of your stuff?
Both will produce results, but the results and the accompanying experience will be very different.
What are you hoping to achieve?
What are you trying to avoid by calling in outside help to "just do it for you"?
The solution doesn't lie in the organized end result; the solution lies in the process.
See the difference?
