The Coaches Guide To Hunkering Down

Two weeks ago while organizing with a client, she jokingly referred to a quarantine. I laughed because I thought she was joking.

Quarantine? What is that even? I thought that was play and make believe in the movies.

Turns out. It’s a real, honest to God thing. We are all crawling around in the dark fumbling for the light switch and daggum where is it!?

What I know to be true is that light drives out dark, so in this time that can feel so emotionally charged, and confusing, and heartbreaking, I want to offer light.

Here is my guide to hunkering down:

Learn Something New

A new language. A new dance.

A new recipe. A new instrument. A new game.

Learning is the best medicine for our brains (aside from laughter).

Keep Calm

Meditation and breathing are like the fruits and veggies for your nervous system. We’ve swallowed enough junk at this point so we need to watch ourselves before we wreck ourselves.

Meditation by Melissa Ambrosini

Meditate with the Insight Timer App (there are free guided medi’s or you can choose how long + music)

Meditate via The Harmony Exercise (this is what I do each and every morning)

Clearing Fear & Density Meditation

Diffuse essential oils during your meditation to keep you calm and grounded. Diffuse at night when you are trying to sleep but find yourself restless.

Mind Your Manners

It is easy to get caught up in the fear and the what-if’s, but if you are keeping that junk at bay and your partner isn’t, then watch out. The waves are about to rock the boat.

Two of my favorite people, Dr. Matt Lyon and his beautiful wife Lynn, have recorded this webinar to help couples through this time of trial.

Cook Up Your Dinner

I am heartbroken for the restaurant owners and the servers and staff. However, is it possible that we’ve gotten a little too used to someone else making our dinner for us?

Sure call in a takeout or two this week, but staying home and cooking is so much better for you.

For your pocketbook. For your waistline. For your dinner table and values.

Try something new like a plant-based dinner.

Read Something

Of all the homes I’ve had the privilege of being in, I know one thing is for certain, we aren’t low on books in this world.

Read one of them. And then another.

If not now, then when.

Audible has made hundreds of book titles free during our “home retreat”.

Watch Something

We’ve made Fridays our movie night (if the weather doesn’t warrant a game of tennis). Watch some documentaries.

Watch a movie or two. Even better, why not watch a home movie.

Watch plays from Broadway

Listen to Something

Music lifts my spirits and jazz has been on heavy rotation in our home this past week. Try it out.

Spotify or maybe YouTube, search for “Jazz for a Rainy Day”.

Move Your Body

Aside from meditating, I am really enjoying movement. Yoga and tennis is where I am focusing my energy at the moment.

Down Dog Yoga App is free until April 1st.

Peloton is free for 90 days.

You could go for a walk, or a hike, or a jog, or a bike ride. Movement (bonus if it is outside) is SO good for the brain and the body. It wakes you up and gives a fresh perspective.

Get Into The Word

This should be Numbero Uno. Get in to God’s word and open up the Bible. It doesn’t matter to which chapter or verse, just see where he wants to speak to you.

If you prefer to get into with my friend Billy, then I highly recommend this sermon.

Billy Graham, Is the Writing On The Wall?

Create Some Order

Want to know how I organize my home office? I shared a BTS this weekend.

Pull out the puzzles and games. See what you and your family actually want to play!

Cozy Up Your Home

My friend Myquillyn shared last week that the only thing you should focus on during this time is making your home cozy. Don’t worry about the decor and all the rules of decorating and all the rules of organizing, just cozy it up. For your sake and your families sake.

Bring out the blankets.

Light the candles. Make a fire pit and just sit by it like you are camping. Because you are. You are camping out at home.

Move the chairs into the living room. Whatever needs to be done, do it.

Dream a new dream

Now is the time. The space has been given. What do you want from life.

What are you letting go.

Where do you want the next 10 years to take you.

Find your inner mentor

Turn inward and remember that you are your own best coach and mentor. She lives deep within you. Search high and low for her. Invite her to the table. Tell her you care about what she knows.

Sending you so much love - don’t miss the good amidst the tornado. :)
