Can We Want What We Already Have?

As I stood in front of my closet, staring at the clothes hanging, I found myself feeling dissatisfied.

“Ugh, nothing in here is cute. I don’t feel inspired by anything.”

I have a tendency to want more clothes, which is counterbalanced by my dislike of a cluttered closet. Said another way, I flounder between wanting a minimal clothes closet and wanting a closet full of beautiful clothing options.

Feeling disenchanted with my things is a thought that makes me uneasy. Afterall, these were beautiful pieces of clothing that I had at one time or another chosen to purchase and bring home. Somehow it felt disrespectful to the clothes I had when all I could think about were the clothes that I wanted.

The flip side of all that thinking was that there were cute pieces in there and some that I really did like.

I decided to challenge myself to think creatively and see what stylish outfits I could pull together out of these clothes.

And you want to know something? It worked! It took some creative juices and some time on my part to try on different outfits but it was so-much-fun-to-shop-my-closet!

The need to want more can come from many different places:

  • Marketing.

  • A dissatisfaction with our current home or situation.

  • Recommendation of others (directly or indirectly).

As we near the holidays, the chase for more gets faster and faster.

More presents. More wrapping. More decorations. More cookies.

In an effort to simplify Christmas and the holiday season, I invite you to want what you already have.

I challenge you to “want” the clothes that are already in your closet. Afterall, you wanted it at some point and now it is here.

RELATED: Are You Missing The Good?

If we don’t take the time to appreciate the things we have, then the finish line of contentment gets moved farther and farther ahead. It becomes an unreachable goal.

And while you are appreciating these items, give yourself permission to let go of the items that are no longer serving you. For me it was the sweater that always rode up when I wore it, and the pants that dug into my belly thus reminding me that I haven’t hit the gym enough this week.

Thank you for your time with me, but now I send you off to find another owner!

Cycling through items in your home will always happen, but in the middle there is joy and contentment available.
