How To Make The Perfect Lotion At Home That's Silky & Not Greasy
It has been years since I read a book that changed my perspective on health in such a dramatic way. Master Your Metabolism is still a book I reference often and recommend to anyone wanting to understand their body and their health in a different way other than 1) eat less and 2) workout more.
Of course those things matter, but there is more to the story.
Jillian Michaels (yes the Biggest Loser lady) came to the table with something I hadn’t thought much about.
Metabolism
And how your metabolism is like a big chemistry equation in your body. If the equation is out of balance, then your metabolism will be effected and thus your waistline.
She discussed what affects the metabolism in positive and negative ways, but the chapter on toxins really opened my eyes, pissed me off, and set me on a path to reduce the toxic load in our home almost immediately.
I threw away loads of cleaning supplies, Glade plug-ins, and ditched a ton of scented bodycare.
Replacing those items became something that I did at a very slow pace. And something that I will share with you more and more.
First up was my daily habit of applying body lotion. Like most women in the United States, I had an impressive backstock of Bath & Body Works lotion. Each morning I slathered the lotion on thinking I was nourishing my body.
Meanwhile, my liver and metabolism were crying out in agony!
I’ve made my own lotion since 2012 and perfected the recipe on how to make the perfect lotion at home that is silky yet not greasy!
One more thing, the other thing I love about this switch is the money I save. Yes it feels expensive when you first buy the supplies, but they will last you a year (or more)!
If you don’t want to DIY, but you are interested in a low-tox lotion swap (read: low tox, not no-tox), then here are my recommendations:
HOW TO MAKE THE PERFECT LOTION
Now, here is how to make your own lotion at home that is creamy and non-greasy!
The basic ingredients are:
Coconut oil (bonus: use for oil pulling)
If you want to add in essential oils, then my go-to’s are:
Peppermint (helps circulate blood, anti-inflammatory and antiseptic)
Tea Tree (would be great mixed with Peppermint) (antiviral, antibacterial, antifungal)
TerraShield (to keep mosquitos away during the summer months)
Lavender (calming for your nervous system and your skin, natural antibiotic, antiseptic, antidepressant, and detoxifier, prevents scarring)
Geranium (encourages circulation of blood)
Cypress (acts as an astringent upon the whole venous system, great for varicose veins)
The ratio of coconut oil and butters are: 50% coconut oil, 30% shea butter, 10% cocoa butter, 10% aloe gel.
Heat the oil and butters in a small saucepan over low heat (you don’t want it to smoke).
Remove from heat and pour into a mixing bowl.
Add in aloe gel. Stir slightly until mixed.
Store in refrigerator for 30 minutes to cool and set.
Once cooled, remove from refrigerator and whip using a hand mixer.
Beat oil for 1 - 2 minutes (should begin to look like a lotion).
Add in 30 drops of essential oil, or 15 drops of one oil and 15 drops of another.
Beat mixture for another 1 -2 minutes.
Store in a glass jar. (should last 6 weeks - 2 months)
That is it! :) Share your own lotion on social media and be sure to tag me (@thejenniferburnham) - I love seeing your creations!
