How To Create Space In Your Closet
I firmly believe that all humans would benefit from a healthy seasonal clothing exchange twice a year.
When I bring this up to clients, they usually meet my recommendation with stiff shoulders, widen eyes, and increased blood pressure.
N - O
“I don’t want to”
“There is more than enough space in here”
“I don’t think that fits my lifestyle”
And so on and so forth.
And I double down with, “I don’t care”.
Now this can come across as a bit harsh and I am NOT an organizing dictator; however, there are a few rules to the game that I keep in my secret handbook that I want to pass along to them.
And now to you.
Secret Rule #1: Rotate your clothes twice a year
To be clear, I am not talking about a full closet rotation, but rather just an exchange of seasons.
Winter for summer. Summer for winter.
Fall and spring get to stay put.
Why is this such a secret play that only I understand but no one else wants to embrace?
Possibly because it feels like a lot of work. Our brains are funny like that; it can make a mountain out of a molehill.
What I am talking about is 1 hour on a Saturday twice a year.
When it is 90* outside, you do not need to see cashmere and wool. Likewise, when it is 30* outside, you do not need to see linen and sundresses.

Keep a pen and paper handy as it is worthy of notes. ;)
Container Options
Are you wondering where you should store your seasonal wares? Here are a few suggestions:
On the top shelf of your closet
Under your bed (my fave)
In another closet (still on the hangers) (not my preferred method but it will do)
Taking the clothes off the hanger and folding them requires you to process:
Did I like this skirt/shirt/dress when I wore it?
Did I wear it at all? If not, why?
Will I be excited about taking it out again next year?
Built in purging! cue the praise hands
When storing on a shelf or under the bed, my go-to storage brand is Hefty. Here are a few options:
