How To Beat The Bloat From The Holiday Season

“We are still in celebration mode”, Raymond uttered as we were discussing our dinner plans one night last week.

Celebration mode had been activated long before Thanksgiving and it was starting to creep up on me. By way of tight waistbands and low energy.

It is hard to remember if this happens every year but I’m fairly confident that it does. There is so much fun associated with the holiday season and a large part of that is the food and celebration.

My mom’s fudge and chex mix. Our chocolate oatmeal cookies that we resurrected this year. A few sips of champagne. A little negotiating with self, “well I’m already eating bad as it is, what is this little cookie going to hurt.”

In the season, it is all fun and enjoyable. Until it isn’t.

Like when my sweatpants are too tight around the midsection, or I’m feeling much more lethargic due to eating things I normally don’t.

Then I know it is time to hit the reset button. I’m not as cavalier to do this starting Jan 1 and this year I have vowed to prep in advance of starting Jan 10.

Just Say No… To Foods That Are Acidic, Addicting, & Allergenic

For me that is the following:

  • coffee (acidic & addicting)

  • alcohol (addicting & inflammatory)

  • gluten (allergenic & inflammatory)

  • dairy (high on the inflammatory scale)

  • soy (can be allergenic)

Swaps will be made for coffee and alcohol and dairy.

Tea > coffee

Mocktails > alcohol

Oatmilk > dairy

For example, my morning routine will consistent of

  • Detox tea with milk thistle paired with an Energy Fizz Stick

  • Breakfast will be a nutrient packed smoothie loaded with 10g protein and 5g of fiber

  • I will be drinking plenty of citrus water (lemon, orange, or limes squeezed in my water) throughout the morning and afternoon.

I will drink my daily green drink with lunch to get a daily dose of pre & probiotics, 36 fruits & veggies, and CoQ10 for energy and focus enhancement.

Dinner will be the usual of salads, soups, bowls, and other go-to plant-based dinners that are tasty and good for you!

The last piece of the Jan Reset puzzle is movement. I have missed my weekly yoga sessions since my studio closed in 2020. I’ll be joining our local YMCA for two months to see how I like their workout class offerings + their cardio and weight training equipment. Something is better than nothing.

When I don’t feel good, then everything else seems infinitely harder. If you are nodding your head yes, then I encourage you to do something similar this month.

Jennifer’s Reset Button Tips

  • Commit to 30 days

  • Make swaps like the ones mentioned above

  • Schedule in your workouts (this is the only way I can accomplish them)

  • Cook at home
