How To Create A Landing Zone In Your Garage
Does every house have a need for a landing zone?
Yes it does.
A landing zone is nothing more than a transition space between home and car. A place to leave things you need to take with you somewhere.
A place to drop things when you come home that may not need to be put away in the house but rather stored until the next time you leave again.
Some houses have a mudroom or landing zone built in, usually in the form of a laundry room.
Some houses have zero transition space and thus piles of stuff end up near the entry/exit door.
Piles are indicators that organization is needed in that area.
In the case of this home, the garage entered directly into the kitchen. The coat closet was tucked away by the front door rendering it useless for her family.
Her garage was large and a bit overwhelmed with scooters, bike helmets, spray paint cans and the like. However, it was the most logical space to build out a landing zone.
We repurposed her existing storage shelves and made due with what she had.
Sorting is always the first step followed directly by purging. All the stuff you decide is no longer needed/wanted/used can either be donated (my preference) or sold in a yard sale (lots of work, some payoff).
Organizing takes longer than you think and I recommend breaking it up into two sessions:
Sort, group, purge
Move around what you already have to repurpose your shelving/furniture/bins
Organizing also doesnβt have to cost a lot of money if you use what you already have. My tip is to repurpose and live with it for a few weeks. Take measurements of the space and then go look for something that fits your needs only after deciding what it is you need exactly.
Living with your new organizing system for a few weeks will help you with this.
